HP and the Environment
Addressing electronic waste is one of HP's global citizenship priorities. HP has a long history of recycling, the company's first recycling program having been established in 1987.
In Australia, HP has offered product recycling programs for commercial customers since 2003. In 2005, HP Australia joined forces with Sustainability Victoria in the initial trial of Byteback that offers consumers in Victoria the ability to return their computing equipment for environmentally-sound recycling. As the original industry partner in the initial Byteback trial, HP continues to contribute to the diversion of approximately 10-15 tonnes of computer equipment from Victorian landfill each month. In total, HP Australia recycling initiatives diverted 1,750 tonnes of computing hardware from landfill for re-use, refurbishment and recycling in financial year 2006.
In addition to hardware recycling programs, HP Australia has partnered with Planet Ark since 2003 on the Cartridges 4 Planet Ark program to offer a convenient and environmentally-sound recycling service for printing supplies. HP Australia is also a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant and has signed a voluntary 3-year Sustainability Compact with the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) to promote improved environmental practices in both government and industry. HP participates in the Federal Business Roundtable on Sustainable Development, and leads the development of the Electronics Industry Code of Conduct, an international framework to extend environmental sustainability practices throughout the supply chain.
